5 Tips for Turning Your Temp Job into a Permanent Position
Many temp employees would like permanent positions. If this sounds like you, here are five tips to help turn your current or next temp job into something permanent. You could even land a position with the company of your dreams!
1. Sign Up with Specialized Agencies
When you sign up with a temp or staffing agency that focuses on particular companies, fields or needs, you are much more likely to get a position that matches your skills and abilities without much, or any, additional training required. Ask the staffing agencies you are considering about which companies they place clients with. It’s a great way to get in with a company you have always wanted to work for.
2. Explain Your Desire from the Beginning
Let the staffing agency know from the beginning that your ultimate goal is to be permanently hired. You may get additional consideration for longer-term positions and/or positions with the possibility of permanent or direct hire.
3. Act As If You Belong There
Perform your temp work as if you belong at the company every day like everyone else. Put forth your best efforts, and it is likely that your colleagues and managers will notice. Part of doing this is to be flexible and eager to pitch in.
4. Establish a Cultural Fit
It is a huge score when an employee, whether temp or permanent, is a cultural fit for a business. When you enjoy working for a company, one of the best ways to show you belong there permanently is to underscore how well you fit in there. Show your chemistry by dressing appropriately, socializing well with others and being passionate about your work.
5. Use Your Insider Knowledge
Because you are on the inside of a company, you have access to lots of real-life observations and data that other people do not. Try to assess the needs of the company, how they are going unmet, and how you can meet them. Keep an eye out for job openings at the company as well.
