The Importance of Putting Yourself in the Employer’s Position
When it comes to job interviews, the old cliché still holds true: You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Job interviews are often the first chance that you’ll have as an applicant to make an impression on your potential boss. To do that, you need to be aware of how you’re presenting yourself and what the interviewer sees when they look across the table.
Awareness is Key
Interviews aren’t just tests that you have to pass. Interviewers are looking to find what value you will bring to their organization, which means you have to have a clear idea of what you bring to the table. You want the interviewer sitting across from you to believe that you are the person who has the skills to complete the job they need done. Interviewers want to know that youunderstand what would be expected of you and the skills you possess that would help you get the task done.
Be Aware of Nonverbal Cues
While you may only be focusing on your verbal answers, and interviewer is going to pick up on what your body is communicating as well. You want to make sure that your actions don’t send a contradictory message to the one you’re conveying verbally. Keep eye contact when you answer questions and sit up straight. You don’t want to seem unreachable or aloof because of the way you’re sitting in your chair, or like you’re hiding something because you can’t look your interviewer in the eye.
Specificity Shows Confidence
When you discuss your former positions and your skills, tailor your answers to questions that have been asked. As you explain your skills, be specific about how your experiences and skills will inform your efforts as you complete the tasks required in the position you’re seeking. Keep your answers short and make sure they are on point – rambling answers don’t show confidence or skill.
